Axbridge Sports & Social Club was formed on 29th July 1981 to "promote and encourage sporting and social activities within the parish of Axbridge".
Since being formed, the Sports & Social Club has organised many varied social activities. Any profit from these has been donated to voluntary organisations within the Town or used to fund future events.
Our major activities throughout the year are the summer Fun Day and the Christmas Festivities.
The Fun Day, held on the Furlong recreation field at the beginning of July, is a family day with, amongst other things, activities to amuse children, a barbecue, pig roast, bar throughout the day and evening, and live music from local bands.
The Christmas Festivities are held in the Square on the Saturday before Christmas when all Axbridge children under the age of nine receive a free present from Father Christmas, who arrives in the Square on a horse-drawn 'sleigh'. The Sports & Social committee is also responsible for the Christmas decorations in the Town. On the first weekend in December we will be found climbing up and down ladders in the Square and surrounding roads putting Christmas trees in brackets, and sorting strings of Christmas lights.
We would like to thank our various sponsors and local businesses in Axbridge who offer us so much help and support throughout the year. We would also like to acknowledge the support given by the Jack Todd Fund, which has continued the tradition of purchasing presents for Father Christmas to distribute on the Festivities night.
Finally, we always welcome new members to our committee, so if you are interested in getting involved, either as a committee member or as a helper, please email us, come and see us or call Pauline on 732062.
